Revival to resurrect trackside traditions in a weekend of racing and entertainment In amongst the many people who I met up with at Goodwood was Gordon Palmer of Autofreight fame ... Gordon helped us send cars to the States, and sometimes back, and despite now being 'retired', is given the huge responsibility of bringing all the fantastic cars to both the Goodwood Festival of Speed and the Revival Meeting, and returning them after the events. Gordon mentioned the revival of the KYALAMI 9-HOUR race which of course was an amazing endurance event and next year will be the big 50th Anniversary meeting. The 9-hour Revival recalls those halcyon days when Ferrari, Porsche, Matra, Ford, Lola, Chevron and so many others battled for glory in front of crowds approaching 100 000 who were thrilled by the cars racing through the Kyalami summer sunshine and well into the night. Names like David Piper, Jacky Ickx, Derek Bell, Dickie Attwood, Jo Siffert, Mario Andretti and Clay Regazzoni and so many others were regular visitors, many of them winning that great race.
Overseas interest including a request from 6-time 9-hour race winner David Piper to bring the original Ferrari 250 LM with which he won the ’63 race back to Kyalami along with significant local interest should ensure full fields of the most charismatic cars that ever raced in South Africa, are among the many on track highlights expected at the 9-hour Revival.
